Ultra Precision Encoder Technology for Position Referencing – Mr Kai Hollstein

The Centre’s roll to roll platform is a platform for research in film embossing for wide plastic films containing micro structures used in mass production of film based products like flexible displays, wall coverings, and others.

The aim of this research project was to analyse position referencing methods.  Precision rotary control of the spindle system has to be achieved (currently lacking accuracy due to magnetic bearing design).  Therefore, a system to detect movement of rotational axis was introduced, manufacturing of affiliated encoder scales using lithography was shown and results of experimental analysis was given.

Furthermore, a system suitable for accurate position referencing of plastic film movement was identified and simulated.  Experimental research has been conducted in order to show suitability of the proposed system.

Kai’s MSc research was undertaken at Cranfield University, supported by the EPSRC Centre in Ultra Precision under the supervision of Paul Morantz.
